We have a Europe trip upcoming and would like to watch the Texan NFL games. Europe is six hours ahead of Houston so Sunday afternoon games would be viewed in the evening over there.

The NFL and DirecTV (we are subscribers) offer NFL packages The NFL has a Rewind package for watching replays after the game is over. First of all, you have to subscribe for the full season committing hundreds of dollars. Next, there are all sorts of restrictions. Bottom line, it’s just not worth it, and probably can’t be watched in Europe anyway.

In other words, you can’t just make a quick decision to watch the game you want. Instead, you have to enter into a long term contract for much more content than you want, and even then the game you want may be blacked out or unavailable to you. Bottom line: The offerings suck.

There are so many vested interests and contractual obligations that TV is a mess. The technology is there today but the business side has it totally screwed up. Apple was able to fight through a similar mess when they changed the music industry. Let’s hope they can do the same for TV.
